Adoptable Dogs

Thank you for your interest in adopting a dog from our rescue!

First and foremost, to be considered for adoption, you MUST complete our Adoption Application (red button below).
We do not accept applications from any other source, and inquiries via Petfinder, Adopt-A-Pet, and other third-party sites often do not make it to us (or our replies end up in your spam folder).
All of our dogs are altered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, and microchipped prior to being placed in an adoptive home. We take all necessary precautions to ensure their medical issues have been addressed and they are ready to be adopted, and we will provide all vetting history we have for the dog.
Our adoption fees typically coincide with the age of the dog*:
Puppies - $400
Adults (1 year up to senior) - $350
Seniors - $250
All of the dogs we adopt are intended to serve as pets. We do not adopt service dogs, emotional support animals, or therapy dogs. Adopters may pursue this training on their own but there is no guarantee that the animal would become certified.
Prison-trained dogs include an hour session with a trainer to help transition the dog’s training to you (valid in the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus area within 90 days of adoption).
*Occasionally, a dog’s adoption fee will be sponsored or we may run a separate promotion to offer a discount, which may lower those rates.
We require adopters to abide by all of our adoption requirements and reserve the right to void an adoption at any time, if we feel the dog is in danger or is being abused/neglected. Please familiarize yourself with our adoption requirements detailed at the bottom of this page. In addition, we conduct reference checks with your veterinarian, to ensure your current pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention, and with your landlord, to ensure you are allowed to have a pet if you are renting.
Once you have applied to adopt a dog from us, we will review your application. If you are not selected for the dog in which you applied, please indicate on the application if you are interested in being matched with a different dog. We would be happy to work with you to find a great fit for you and your family!
Please understand we are an all-volunteer organization and may not be able to respond to all applications.
We will contact you if you are selected for a meet and greet.
We appreciate your patience in awaiting a reply from us!

Important Information About Adopting Puppy Mill Survivors 🐢

Q: Why do you require fenced yards for them?
A: Puppy mill dogs are notorious for being extreme flight risks. They do not have a general trust of humans, like dogs who have been raised by loving humans. They also are spooked easily and will take off at the slightest sound. Even the most prepared people have had these dogs take off from them. We have had this happen to two dogs in the rescue and they both did not survive after being hit by cars. We do NOT take that lightly and do not wish that kind of agony on anyone. Even though most of our mill dogs go through the prison program and have learned to walk on a leash, they are not solid enough with their leash manners to solely rely on that as a way to keep them safe. They also cannot be successful on retractable leashes for this reason.
Q: Why do you require another confident dog in the home?
A: As stated above, most mill dogs have a general distrust of humans. They bond quickly to other dogs and find solace in modeling their behavior when in new environments. Through our many years of experience, we find that these dogs excel when provided with a canine role model in the home. If you do not have another dog, we have plenty of other options for you to consider!
Q: Why do you not want them to live with small children?
A: Little humans tend to frighten mill dogs with their loud, high-pitched squeals and their chaotic energy in the home. Additionally, small kids tend to leave doors/gates open and not be able to block dogs from escaping. They also cannot safely handle a mill dog on a leash if the dog gets spooked and bolts. This requirement does not mean that children are unsafe around these dogs; in fact, it’s usually the opposite. We want these dogs to be able to relax, decompress, and find peace after surviving the trauma of the puppy mill. A loud household with small children is usually not compatible.
Please understand that we are all in this for the best interests of the dog and would never prevent them from joining a forever family where we felt they could be safe and loved. However, our experience with hundreds of mill dogs over the years has led us to believe these requirements are necessary and we hope you respect this.

Adoption Requirements

In the adoption process for one of our dogs, you agree to the following:
  • Agree to provide all appropriate vaccinations for said dog, and provide veterinary care in a timely manner when required. This is to include heartworm testing and administration of heartworm preventative.
  • Agree to keep a properly fitted collar on said dog at all times and to keep legible current county/state license tags, your own contact ID tags (at which time, PRO’s can be removed) affixed to the collar. PRO also recommends registering your new dog’s microchip to yourself as soon as possible.
  • Agree not to abuse or neglect this dog or allow anyone else to abuse or neglect this dog.
  • Agree to keep this dog as in indoor companion, to provide a fenced yard or exercise area, and ample food and clean water.
  • Agree to obey all applicable leash laws and to always leash this dog when not in a fenced area or indoors.
  • Agree not to use this dog for fighting, guard duty, or animal research.
  • Agree to assume all responsibility for this dog’s actions and any damage caused by this dog to persons or property, and to release PRO and its agents from any liability concerning this dog or its actions.
  • Agree to never to chain or tether this dog in any location without supervision.
  • Agree to allow PRO or its agents to examine this dog and its living conditions for suitability at any time, with or without prior notification, and will provide, upon request, proof of its medical care.
  • Understand that my acceptance of this dog is on an β€œas is” basis. No guarantees of any kind exist. It is my understanding that every possible precaution has been taken and disclosed to ensure that this dog is healthy and suitable as a household pet. Any condition of health, temperament, or physical condition that is not known by PRO is not the responsibility of PRO. I hold PRO harmless of any liability incurred as a result of the discovery of any conditions as mentioned above.
  • Understand that the adoption of this dog from PRO depends on the honesty of the answers on this contract, the answers on the application I previously completed, the promise to maintain my dog’s health and well being and the promise to welcome this dog into my life and home as a member of my family.
  • Understand and agree that if I must relinquish ownership of said dog for ANY reason, I will relinquish that ownership only to PRO and I will provide transportation to return the dog to PRO’s nearest volunteer. If your dog is found in a shelter after adoption, you will be held responsible for any fees incurred to reclaim the dog.
We do not β€œsell” our rescue dogs; however, we do charge an adoption fee to cover veterinary and other expenses incurred by PRO on behalf of all our rescued dogs. Donations, in addition to the adoption fee, are always welcomed and greatly appreciated. The adoption fee is non-refundable unless otherwise decided upon by PRO Board Members.
By signing our adoption contract, you hereby acknowledge that you have read its entirety, understand its content, agree to uphold the contract, limitations, and restriction, and you will receive a copy in full for your records.
*Adoption fee is non-refundable.
